**The UK Rating Certificate Structure**
The MCA issues rating certificates aligned with STCW requirements. The Efficient Deck Hand certificate covers coastal trading vessels. The Able Seafarer Deck certificate covers internationally trading vessels and requires the full STCW watchkeeping and safety package alongside documented sea service.
ENG1 medical is the UK seafarer medical certificate required before any sea appointment. Issued by MCA-approved medical examiners. Valid for two years in most cases.
**UK Able Seaman Pay**
The UK market produces a split. UK nationals on UK-flagged vessels under UK collective agreements earn above the ITF minimums that govern most international fleet positions. UK nationals on foreign-flagged vessels earn at whatever agreement the vessel operates under.
AB on a UK-flagged coastal vessel: £1,800 to £2,600 per month. AB on a North Sea offshore vessel: £2,500 to £5,000 on rotation. The offshore premium is the most significant rate jump available to UK deck ratings.
**The Bosun Market**
UK bosuns on North Sea offshore supply vessels are among the better-paid unlicensed seafarers in the global market. The combination of BOSIET certification, offshore operational experience and the UK offshore rate structure produces monthly figures of £4,000 to £6,500 on 28/28 rotation.
Building toward this requires the standard career progression: ordinary seaman through able seaman to bosun, with BOSIET added when offshore becomes the target.
**Engine Ratings**
UK motormen and fitters work across the global fleet. The engine rating certificate pathway through MCA follows STCW III/4 and III/5 requirements. UK fitters with trade qualifications from marine or industrial backgrounds enter with an advantage that general engine ratings without trade backgrounds do not have.
