UK MCA Certificates: What You Need for Sea Jobs in British Waters

Working on vessels in UK waters or on UK-registered ships requires specific MCA documentation. Here is what is required and how to get it.

The ENG1 Medical

The ENG1 is the UK seafarer medical certificate. Issued by approved UK maritime doctors rather than standard GPs. Covers vision, hearing, cardiovascular fitness and physical suitability for sea service.

Valid for two years at most. Some conditions limit validity to one year. Required before any other certificate or sea service application proceeds.

Finding an approved ENG1 doctor: the MCA maintains a list of approved doctors on their website. Not all private GPs are approved. Using an approved doctor is essential for an ENG1 that will be accepted by UK operators.

STCW Basic Safety Training

The same international requirement that applies globally. Four courses: Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities.

Approved training centres in the UK: numerous and widely distributed across coastal areas. The MCA website lists currently approved centres.

Valid for five years. Refresher training or sea service evidence required for revalidation.

UK Flag Endorsements

When working on UK-flagged vessels, officers need MCA endorsements confirming their STCW certificates are recognised. The process runs through the MCA and requires submitting your existing certificates for verification.

If your STCW certificates were issued by another flag state, the MCA endorsement process confirms they are accepted for service on UK-flagged vessels.

Officer Certificates

UK officer certificates issued by the MCA are internationally respected. When working on non-UK-flagged vessels, the MCA certificate typically requires the endorsement of the flag state in question. Open registries like Panama and Marshall Islands issue endorsements routinely and quickly for MCA certificates.

Security Awareness and Other Requirements

Post-2010 requirements include Security Awareness for all seafarers and specific additional endorsements for vessel types. Tanker endorsements, passenger ship certificates and offshore-specific training all have UK-specific approved training providers.

The MCA website is the primary reference for current requirements. Certificate requirements change and checking directly rather than relying on older guidance produces accurate information.
