The North Sea offshore sector is one of the best-paying maritime employment markets in the world. For UK-based seafarers with the right qualifications, it is also the most accessible offshore market globally.
The Schedule That Makes Offshore Different
Two weeks on, two weeks off is the standard North Sea rotation. Being home every fourteen days is categorically different from a five-month deep sea contract. For seafarers with young children, partners who work, or other commitments that make extended absences impractical, offshore changes the sustainability of a maritime career entirely.
Four weeks on, four weeks off is the alternative rotation for some vessels and some operational areas. Still significantly better than deep sea contract lengths for home time.
The North Sea Platform Supply Vessel Market
PSVs carry deck cargo and bulk liquids from shore bases to drilling rigs and production platforms. The routine is consistent: load at base, transit offshore, discharge alongside or near the installation, return. The DP approach phase during discharge is the technically specific element requiring officer certification.
Major operators with UK North Sea PSV fleets include Solstad Offshore, Bourbon, Tidewater and DOF. All have crewing departments or preferred manning agencies that handle UK applications.
The Anchor Handling Market
AHTS vessels handle anchor systems when drilling rigs relocate. More operationally demanding than supply vessel work. Stern deck operations with heavy anchor chain and wire, proximity to drilling rigs and high-load winch equipment.
AHTS pays more than PSV at equivalent rank. The additional operational demands and the specific experience requirement justify the premium.
Getting In
The DP certificate is the entry qualification for officer watchkeeping positions. One to two years to complete through the Nautical Institute scheme. Start it before approaching offshore agencies. Having it in progress signals genuine intent.
BOSIET is required for all crew working in UK offshore sectors. Three to four days. Complete it before your first offshore application. Every offshore recruiter asks about it within the first few minutes.
UK Offshore Pay
Monthly contract figures for active North Sea operations.
AB: £2,500 to £5,000 per month. Third Officer: £4,500 to £7,500 per month. Chief Officer: £9,000 to £14,000 per month. Master: £12,000 to £18,000 per month.
Combined with the Seafarers Earnings Deduction, the take-home pay for a UK national in North Sea offshore at senior officer level is among the best available in any industry.
